πŸ“° News from the Foothills

High River retires its flood-era sirens. At its March 9 council meeting, High River voted to decommission its outdoor emergency siren system β€” the network installed after the 2013 flood β€” and move fully to the Alberta Emergency Alert system. Fire Chief Steve Debienne cited aging equipment, ongoing maintenance costs, and the siren system's limited reach in a growing community. The provincial system delivers alerts directly to phones, TVs, and radios. No timeline for decommissioning has been set, but a public education campaign is coming. If you're not signed up for Alberta Emergency Alerts, now's a good time.

🌟 Community Spotlight: This Murder Was Staged at HTA

Forty students in Grades 10–12 at Holy Trinity Academy have spent months rehearsing a comedic murder mystery farce β€” and this weekend is their moment. This Murder Was Staged runs through Saturday, March 14 at HTA, with 7 p.m. curtain times. The disliked director of a theatre company is found dead, everyone is a suspect, and a series of flashbacks reveals everyone had a motive. It's a play within a play, comedy timing is unforgiving, and from all accounts this cast has been up to it. Saturday is your last chance.

🌀️ Weather Snapshot

Cool and unsettled week ahead for the Foothills. Friday brings a mild afternoon around -5Β°C with only a 20% chance of snow β€” decent weather for the Oilers game or an evening out in High River. Saturday cools further to around -9Β°C with a 35% chance of snow flurries, so dress warm for the Repair CafΓ© or the parkrun. Sunday rebounds to a much nicer -2Β°C with clear skies. As always in March, keep an eye on conditions before heading out.

πŸ’¬ What Locals Are Talking About

High River's siren decision is generating conversation β€” some residents have fond memories of the network that sounded the 2013 alarm, and there's real emotional weight in retiring it. Others see it as sensible modernization. Either way, the practical takeaway is clear: if you haven't set up your Alberta Emergency Alert notifications, this week is a good reminder.

The HTA play has been a quieter thread β€” parents and friends buzzing with pride watching teenagers pull off something genuinely difficult. Saturday is the last night.

And spring registration opening in Okotoks had families moving fast. Non-residents can register starting Thursday, March 19 at 8 a.m. Day camp registration opens for residents on Tuesday, March 17.

Thanks for reading, Foothills. Go watch some hockey, get something fixed, and let a retired pilot set you straight about Sully.

Until next week 🌿
